This is not the easiest read--I'm not going to lie. What makes this book interesting is the insights it provides into the lives of people during this time period, not just Martha's personal life at home, but her work outside the home helping the community with their medical issues from birth to death. One can glean much from her brief diary entries: the food eaten, herbs used, clothing worn, transportation difficulties, her place in the economy, the rise of the male entry into her field, etc. If you have the patience and genuine interest, this is worthwhile.
